Bluebell Railway - "Branch Line Weekend"
21st February 2009

Just pause for a moment and reflect on this... The Lewes & East Grinstead Railway commenced operations in 1878 and ran the railway until 1899 - 21 years. The South East & Chatham Railway SE&CR operated for 24 years until 1923. The Southern Railway operated from 1923 until nationalisation in 1948 - 25 years. The Bluebell Railway was founded in 1959. It will be 50 years old this year and has therefore operated the railway longer than any of the previous owner-operators. What an amazing achievement.
I visited the line for the gala in the excellent company of Mike Snow - "Steam on the Web" who was struggling manfully with re-learning his technique following the purchase of a new HD semi-pro video camera and an extremely heavy over-engineered Manfrotto tripod. Mr f**k-it came out several times I can tell you.

An Electro-Diesel on The Bluebell? Yes even I was surprised. E6043 aptly named 'Perseverance' stands at Horsted Keynes awaiting the call to duty. It's been used on the Imberhorne waste tip clearance trains.

I don't profess to know which carriages these are but they look superb. With thanks to Brian Easter... This is the 'Met Set' together with the LC&D pair. Update #2. Brian now tells me that only the Brake Third no 114 is LCDR while the other 4 wheeler is LB&SCR First Class compartment coach no 661. I hope thats correct. I'm sure somebody will contact me if theres anything else to add.

What an unexpected pleasure at Sheffield Park. One of the L&SWR tank locos that operated on the Lyme Regis branch. No. 488 was on display in the Pullman carriage bay. My thanks to the staff member who removed the information board for my photo.
