A fitting start to the GCR WAR weekend collection

I simply had to include this shot of a field spotted a short distance down rthe track north of Quorn. Very topical and poignant.

Avro Lancaster bomber PA474 appears on the horizon on its approach to Quorn. An hour earlier it was in a flypast over Buckingham Palace as part of the Queens birthday celebrations with Trooping The Colour... The sight and sound of this aeroplane and what it stands for made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

PA474 was built at Chester in 1945 and was destined for service with 'The Tiger Force' in the Far East but the war with japan ended before it went into active service.

It joined the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight in November 1973 after restoration at RAF Waddington.

The display by PA474 took place over the adjacent farmland for safety reasons.

The plane carrying the poppy petals makes an appearance at Quorn. Their first drop was something of a failure as the poppies probably landed on the A6!
