GCR War weekend - Railway Photos
18th June 2005

The Great Central Railway held its celebrations over the weekend 17/18/19 June 2005 for the 60th Anniversary since the end of WWII. The station at Quorn was the base for the Allied forces. The car parking area was full of military vehicles and most of the occupants wore uniforms of the 1940's. meanwhile at Rothley on the other side of the English Channel (Swithland Reservoir) the German army had set up their camp in the car park and a "skirmish" took place at 2.30 between the respective troops in a re-enactment . This was staged using "dummy" bullets from machine guns, rifles and even a mortar with smoke bombs. There was action, noise and plenty of drama to entertain the crowds. Meanwhile at 3pm a Spitfire flypast took place at Quorn and that was followed by a "bombing" run at 4pm that unfortunately set fire to a small area of embankment. Overall though it was an excellent day.

33116 (D6535) awaits a complete rewire. I enjoyed a chat with one of the fitters in the shed who told me that the engines were fired up without too much trouble but then he pointed to a huge pile of wiring which had been stripped out of the loco and needs replacement. However he appeared quite confident that work would not take long and with some body panel repairs and some straighteneing to the chassis and a repaint then this will provide an excellent addition to the operational fleet.

After the "skirmish" at Rothley at 2.50 large numbers of passengers wanted to travel to Quorn to see the Spitfire display. Unfortunately the 2.54 train was a 2-car DMU. Many friendships were struck up in the squash to get on.
